MBALE | A census enumerator at to Mausi Village in Bukiende Subcounty, Mbale District, woke up in the morning stretching from a goodnight's sleep and walked straight into a dreaded morning right in his living room.

Sharon Mutuwa and her family had not heard a thing the night of May 17 but the front door broken into and a census tablet was nowhere to be seen.

As well as the Nubia tab, the burglars made way with Shs217,000, national identification documents, work identification, a Techno smartphone, office keys, a flat iron, and other items.

The burglars had scaled the perimeter wall of the home of Bulukulu parish chief in Fumu Village, Bufukhula Parish of Nyondo Sub-County by using a log obtained from a neighbouring kiosk, a preliminary report by police said.

Once inside the gated compound, they broke the padlock and gained access into the sitting room, where the census gadget was kept.

A report was lodged at the Nyondo Police Post under file number SD REF 03/17/05/2024 as police launched investigations into the matter.

Expressing concern, a resident who chose to remain anonymous said it was a "distressing event".

It's troubling to see such brazen acts of theft, especially targeting individuals tasked with important community duties like census enumeration," the resident said.

Didacus Okoth, Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) public relations officer, condemned the acts, highlighting two similar incidents in Kampala and Luwero, where both gadgets were tracked, recovered, and culprits apprehended.

Okoth reassured the public regarding data safety, explaining that the gadgets are directly connected to the central server, facilitating direct uploading of collected data.

He urged census officials to exercise increased vigilance, recommending group movements. Furthermore, he called for beefed-up security during the census exercise.
