OYAM | Police in Oyam District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of a 43-year-old woman.

The deceased, Betty Acio, a resident Wanglobo Village, was found hanging on a tree at Dere Primary School in the same area.

It is alleged that Acio, now deceased, had recently returned to her parents' home after divorcing her husband, with whom she had five children.

Locals say the deceased had been struggling with excessive alcohol consumption.

The North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, confirmed the incident.

“It is unfortunate that her life was brutally taken. Preliminary findings indicate the victim was gang-raped, murdered, and her body hanged on a tree where it was discovered,” Okema told Nile Post.

Police said the scene was documented by investigators from Oyam Central Police Station as detectives make inquiries into the circumstance that led to the death of the deceased.

“Our team rushed to the scene, the body has been removed and conveyed to Anyeke Health Center IV pending post-mortem examination,” says the police spokesperson.

Currently, Okema said four suspects have been apprehended to aid investigations, and cases of murder have been preferred against suspects.

The suspects being held at Oyam Central Police Station have been identified as Denis Adwere, James Akwanga, James Otim, and Bonny Ocen.

“As Police we want to appeal for calmness from the relatives of the deceased. We are closely investigating the case and shall ensure justice is served to the grieving family,” says SP Okema.
