A man visiting an inmate at Luzira Maximum Prison has been arrested for masquerading as a Police officer.

“He was dressed in a police uniform resembling one donned by Counter Terrorism Police with his name tag similar to those donned on the counter terrorism police uniform. They said they were visiting a friend and an inmate, Brian Ssempijja,” deputy police spokesperson, Claire Nabakka said on Monday.

She explained that whereas Mugerwa had managed to beat security at the entrance of Luzira, officers got curious after realizing that the warrant card indicated that he was an Assistant Superintendent of Police, the pips didn’t indicate the same.

“While the two were inside the prison premises, management became suspicious of Mugerwa who had a warrant card identifying him as an Assistant Superintendent of Police, his uniform didn’t have the pips to show this. On this suspicion, the regional prisons commander for Kampala Extra, invited the two to her office for questioning and here she realized they were not officers,” Nabakka said.

She noted the duo was later arrested and detained at Jinja Road Police Station from where they will be arraigned in courts of law on charges of personation contrary to section 17 of the Anti Corruption Act 2009.
