Africa’s Postal Sector Must Embrace Digital Innovation, Says UCC Boss
UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo called for digital transformation in Africa’s postal networks, stressing e-commerce, track-and-trace systems, and financial inclusion as key to building a modern, resilient postal ecosystem.

 

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo has urged Africa’s postal networks to adopt digital solutions to remain relevant in the era of e-commerce, improve last-mile connectivity, and drive financial inclusion.

Speaking at the 44th Ordinary Session of the Administrative Council of the Pan African Postal Union in Kigo, Nyombi stressed that the postal sector, far from being obsolete, continues to be a key pillar of global trade and economic activity, valued at over US$400 billion.

Welcoming delegates from across Africa to Uganda, Nyombi expressed his gratitude to the Chief Guest, Dr Aminah Zawedde, whose presence underscores the Government of Uganda’s commitment to the growth and modernisation of the nation’s communications and postal sectors.

“Far from being obsolete, the sector remains a vital pillar of global trade and economic activity, valued at over 400 billion US dollars,” he said.

He noted that the rapid rise of e-commerce is driving postal networks to evolve into sophisticated logistics, financial inclusion, and digital service platforms. These innovations are particularly important for improving last-mile connectivity in underserved and rural communities across the continent.

Uganda’s active participation in PAPU and its election to the Council of Administration of the Universal Postal Union reflect the country’s commitment to supporting postal sector modernisation.

“The mission of this Council over the next two days is clear: to harness digital innovation, including track-and-trace solutions and digital addressing, to build a smart, resilient, and inclusive postal ecosystem for all of Africa,” he said.

The 44th Ordinary Session of the PAPU Administrative Council brings together postal and communications experts from across Africa to discuss strategies for strengthening postal services, integrating digital technologies, and fostering greater economic inclusion through innovative postal solutions.
