The acting Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Uganda, Fan Xucheng, has underscored the importance of language as a key carrier of civilization, noting that the Chinese language offers a unique gateway into understanding China’s culture, values, and ways of life.
He observed that language is not only a communication tool but also a bridge for cultural exchange, allowing people to learn from one another and deepen mutual understanding between nations.
Fan highlighted the growing cooperation between China and Uganda, noting that this partnership has strengthened the use of Chinese as an emerging communication language in various professional and educational engagements. He also pointed out that Chinese language skills are increasingly being used in international business settings beyond Africa.
Rising Demand for Chinese Language in Uganda
Mbale City Resident City Commissioner (RCC), George Wopuwa , expressed appreciation to the Chinese Embassy and its partners for creating opportunities for Ugandans to learn Chinese, describing it as a gateway to global opportunities.
He noted that for the past two years, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has been administering Chinese language examinations at O-Level, with learners performing well.
“We hope this will also be extended to A-Level so that more students can benefit,” he said.
Wopuwa further encouraged stakeholders to expand Chinese language education beyond Kampala, urging increased access in upcountry regions such as Mbale, where many schools are willing to adopt the curriculum if given the opportunity.
Wang Wenting, General Manager of Sino-Mbale Industrial Park, thanked participants, the Chinese Embassy, and partners for supporting the event, noting that Chinese language is more than a communication tool—it is also a “lamp” that broadens understanding and opportunity.
He welcomed the growing collaboration between Ugandan and Chinese staff within the industrial park, describing it as a milestone in deepening cultural and economic integration.
Wang also expressed optimism about the continued development of the 2026 Chinese Innovation Day, saying it reflects stronger cooperation between the two countries.
Call for Skills Development and Training
Mbale Town Mayor-elect Joyce Kidulu highlighted the economic benefits of Chinese language proficiency, particularly for employees working in Chinese-linked institutions and industries.
She called on the Chinese Embassy and Sino-Mbale Industrial Park to consider offering basic Chinese language training to new employees to improve efficiency and career growth opportunities.
Kidulu also emphasized that the Uganda–China partnership continues to create meaningful opportunities for skills development, trade, and employment.
She noted that institutions such as the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) and Makerere University, through the Confucius Institute, have the potential to produce more skilled Chinese language professionals if adequately supported.
The event featured performances by students from Makerere University Confucius Institute, including Chinese fashion displays, music, and cultural dances.
The celebrations attracted members of the Chinese community from Kampala and Mbale, as well as employees from Sino-Mbale Industrial Park, reflecting growing cultural exchange and cooperation between Uganda and China.
