Presidential aspirants are now two months into campaigning, while parliamentary candidates have spent at least ten days canvassing for votes.

However, the final status of many candidates still depends on the outcome of petitions filed with the Commission.

According to the EC, a total of 292 petitions were submitted by aspirants challenging various nomination decisions. Of these, 204 have been heard so far.

Some petitioners, including Karuhanga Benon, contesting the Mawogola West parliamentary seat, and Casbart Tukundane, the Bushenyi–Ishaka Municipality aspirant, are awaiting rulings that could significantly influence their political contests.

EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the Commission is handling each petition carefully, reviewing them on a case-by-case basis to ensure fairness and accuracy.

“We understand the weight of the decisions that come from the Commission. As of now, we have completed hearings for about 70 percent of all petitions. Some petitioners have already received their rulings,” Mucunguzi said.

He noted that the complexity of some cases requires thorough examination, which may delay pronouncements, but reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency.

“There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Rulings are made based on the nature of each petition and the evidence presented. Some may take longer than others,” he explained.

Mucunguzi also urged candidates to continue campaigning while awaiting rulings unless the EC provides specific instructions to the contrary.

He added that the Commission remains open to complaints from any member of the public or candidate but will soon set a cut-off date for nomination-related petitions to allow for smooth ballot preparation ahead of the 2026 elections.
