A Jinja-based non-profit organisation, Anadolu Foundation, in partnership with Turkish charity UMESKO, has slaughtered over 600 heads of cattle in commemoration of Eid al-Adha in a major humanitarian initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable communities across the Busoga sub-region.
The exercise, conducted at Wantunda Village in Busedde Sub-county, Jinja District, is expected to benefit thousands of people over a three-day distribution period running from May 27 to May 29.
The meat will be distributed across all 12 districts of Busoga as well as Jinja City.
Speaking during the event, the Director of Anadolu Foundation, Iddi Menya, said the initiative is intended to ensure that disadvantaged groups are able to partake in the Eid celebrations.
“The beneficiaries include the less privileged in our communities, such as widows, orphans and even non-Muslims. We encourage mosque leaders to come and collect the meat starting today,” Menya said.
He noted that the foundation remains committed to inclusive community support, especially during significant religious occasions.
Ibrahim Ozer, a Turkish national and proprietor of UMESKO, said the partnership reflects their commitment to extending humanitarian assistance beyond borders.
“This is my first time in Uganda. We came to support the needy and vulnerable communities so that they can also celebrate Eid al-Adha with dignity,” Ozer said.
He emphasised that the act of sacrifice during Eid al-Adha is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition, commemorating the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who demonstrated obedience to God through his willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
Hundreds of residents from different parts of Busoga turned up at the slaughter site, with many expressing gratitude for the support, especially amid economic challenges.
The initiative is expected to significantly boost food access for vulnerable households during the festive period while reinforcing the spirit of sharing and compassion that defines Eid al-Adha.
