The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainable national development as Uganda edges closer to first oil production, according to Herbert Ssempogo, Senior Corporate Relations Officer at UNOC.
Speaking on Spotlight Uganda hosted by Sanyuka Television under the theme, “Transforming Uganda's Energy Future through Partnership and Accountability,” Ssempogo emphasized UNOC’s pivotal role in ensuring that the country’s oil and gas resources contribute meaningfully to national progress.
“UNOC is a company the government established to ensure that oil and gas bring in revenue. We work on behalf of the government,” he said, highlighting the corporation’s mandate and strategic importance.
Ssempogo cited milestones such as the Kingfisher Development Project, a flagship upstream venture expected to produce 40,000 litres of oil, with further progress anticipated before the year ends.
He noted that initial resistance delayed financing, but the project is now advancing steadily.
He reaffirmed UNOC’s adherence to national laws, governance procedures, and financial controls, stressing that all revenue is deposited into the Petroleum Fund and invested in major infrastructure development projects. Regulatory oversight, including evaluations by the Inspector General of Government (IGG), ensures continued accountability.
Looking ahead, Ssempogo projected that full-scale production and eventual export would generate Shs 2.2 billion annually, reinforcing the sector’s potential to boost national revenue.
He emphasized that petroleum revenues will be strictly regulated to support long-term national development.
