UBOS Calls for Authentic Data to Build Prosperous Continent Ahead of African Statistics Day

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has joined other national statistical offices across the continent to commemorate African Statistics Day, which will be observed on November 18, 2025, under the theme “Leveraging Innovation in Data and Statistics to Promote a Just, Peaceful, Inclusive, and Prosperous Society for Africans.”

African Statistics Day is celebrated annually to highlight the vital role of reliable data in driving sustainable development, good governance, and evidence-based decision-making across the continent.

Speaking during a press briefing to launch activities for the African Statistics Week, Mr. Didaus Okoth, the UBOS Principal Public Relations Officer, said this year’s theme aligns with the Bureau’s mission to modernize data production and promote the use of credible statistics in planning and policymaking.

“The theme echoes our commitment to harness innovative data production technologies to generate quality statistics for planning and decision-making,” Okoth said. “With the rapid spread of misinformation in today’s digital age, it is crucial that we prioritize the use of authentic, verified data to guide national and regional development.”

Mr. Okoth emphasized that the future of statistics in Uganda is promising, with UBOS investing heavily in digital innovation, capacity building, and public trust in official data. The Bureau aims to transform Uganda into a data-driven society where decisions at all levels are guided by accurate, credible, and timely information.

“As UBOS, we are advocating for the use of credible data and discouraging the spread of false information. Authentic statistics form the foundation of sound policies and sustainable development,” he added.

Throughout the commemorative week, UBOS will conduct a series of activities aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of quality statistics and strengthening confidence in the national data system.

The Bureau also plans to promote greater collaboration among government agencies, private sector players, and development partners in advancing the production and use of official statistics.

African Statistics Day serves as a reminder of the central role that trustworthy data plays in achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — building a just, peaceful, and prosperous Africa anchored on facts, not speculation.
