Kampala — MTN Uganda has emerged as the overall Gold Award winner for Excellence in Integrated Reporting at the 2025 Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards, reaffirming its leadership in transparency, sustainability, and good corporate governance.
The technology and telecommunications giant also scooped the Sustainability Reporting Award for its strong commitment to impactful environmental, social and governance (ESG) communication, the Financial Reporting Award under the Consumer and Industry Products category, and a Certificate of Recognition in the Listed Entity Category.
Now in their 15th year, the FiRe Awards are organised by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) in partnership with the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) and the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE).
The 2025 awards were held under the theme, “Sustainability Practices and Reporting in Uncertain Global Times,” highlighting the growing importance of ESG principles in modern corporate reporting.
Speaking after receiving the award on behalf of MTN Uganda, Amanda Bbosa Rabwoni, the company’s Senior Manager for Investor Relations, said the recognition reaffirmed MTN’s dedication to responsible business practices and transparent communication with stakeholders.
“These awards affirm MTN Uganda’s commitment to excellence in financial and sustainability reporting,” Rabwoni said.
“As a listed entity, we take pride in ensuring that our stakeholders, from investors to customers, have access to clear and meaningful information about how we create value. This recognition is a testament to our purpose of driving shared prosperity and sustainable growth.”
Executives from Uganda’s financial sector commended the winners for promoting accountability and ethical leadership in business.
Denis Kizito, the director of market supervision at the Capital Markets Authority, emphasized that sustainability is now a central consideration for investors worldwide.
“Aligning Uganda’s capital markets with global sustainability standards is critical for building investor confidence and supporting long-term socio-economic transformation,” Kizito said.
Uganda Securities Exchange CEO, Paul Bwiso, praised the FiRe Awards for their impact on governance culture across the corporate sector.
“The FiRe Awards have evolved into a platform that promotes governance and responsible leadership in Uganda’s capital markets,” Bwiso said.
For MTN Uganda, this latest recognition extends a strong record of excellence in corporate disclosure.
The company won three awards at the 2024 FiRe Awards and has received multiple accolades in previous years for its financial and sustainability reporting.
MTN’s first Sustainability Report, released in 2024, was a milestone in its evolution from a telecommunications provider to a key driver of sustainable development.
The report detailed a 58.4 percent reduction in carbon emissions through renewable energy deployment at more than 500 network sites, a 72 percent local supplier retention rate, and Shs4.6 billion invested in education and digital inclusion through the MTN Foundation.
It also highlighted major strides in digital and financial inclusion, with 4G coverage rising to 87.9 percent, 5G coverage expanding from 0.3 percent to 15.3 percent, and fibre infrastructure extending to over 17,000 kilometres nationwide.
MTN Uganda’s Chief Executive Sylvia Mulinge has previously described sustainability as being at the heart of the company’s vision.
“True success is measured not only in financial performance but in the lives we touch, the environment we protect, and the opportunities we create,” Mulinge said during the 2024 Sustainability Report launch.
The FiRe Awards were established to recognize organizations that uphold high standards of accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct in financial reporting.
This year’s awards once again underscored the growing expectation for businesses to go beyond numbers and demonstrate tangible social and environmental impact.
Reflecting on the achievement, Rabwoni said MTN would continue to strengthen its commitment to responsible growth.
“This year’s Gold Award motivates us to continue raising the bar,” she said. “As MTN Uganda advances toward its 2030 vision of integrated sustainability excellence, we remain committed to doing business the right way for our customers, our investors, and Uganda’s future.”
