In response to this imperative, Mr. Hamza Mutebi, Chief Executive Officer of SWICO, unveiled a concrete broker-centric commitment. Recognizing the broker community as a whole, SWICO pledged to significantly overhaul its operations.

Uganda’s insurance industry, which has long struggled with one of the continent’s lowest penetration rates, today gathered to address a fundamental question of its future: whether to continue a culture of cut-throat individualism or embrace profound collaboration. The Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda (IBAU) and Statewide Insurance Company (SWICO) co-hosted a pivotal CEO Breakfast at the Fairway Hotel, themed "Driving Transformation Together: Shaping the Future of Insurance," signaling a decisive shift in strategic direction.

The event, attended by top industry executives and regulators, served as a platform for candid self-critique. Keynote speaker Prof. Samuel Sejjaaka, Country Business Leader at MAT ABACUS Business School, delivered a powerful challenge, asserting that the prevailing mindset has rendered the sector unsustainable. He declared, "Partnership is the most overused and under-delivered word in business. True collaboration is the engine for business growth in today's competitive landscape." Prof. Sejjaaka outlined the urgent need to reject fierce individualism and transactional, short-term approaches—what he termed 'Red Ocean' strategies—to focus instead on co-creating solutions for the vast majority of Ugandans who remain unprotected by insurance. He argued that the only path to sustainable sector growth is through forging profitable, long-term alliances capable of reaching new markets.

In response to this imperative, Mr. Hamza Mutebi, Chief Executive Officer of SWICO, unveiled a concrete broker-centric commitment. Recognizing the broker community as a whole, SWICO pledged to significantly overhaul its operations. This new framework includes promises of drastically improved claims processing and underwriting turnaround times, implementing dedicated relationship management, ensuring transparent processes, and focusing innovation efforts on simple, tech-enabled products. Mr. Mutebi affirmed the company's commitment, stating, "We want to walk the journey with you. The only way we can do that is to actually partner, creating an environment where we can all grow and prosper."

This newfound unity was welcomed by the industry’s regulatory body. Mr. Bernard Obel, Director of Supervision at the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA), commended the IBAU-SWICO partnership as a positive sign of maturity. He praised SWICO’s consistent legacy of innovation and encouraged the industry to continue developing accessible and inclusive insurance products.
