Kamuli — Traders in Kamuli have called on President Yoweri Museveni to intervene against high taxes, unregulated levies, and power exploitation, citing these as obstacles to business growth and economic development.
The appeal was made during the “Meet, Listen, and Make Solutions” initiative organized by the Kamuli Traders Association, which brought together industrial area workers, market vendors, transporters, and other business community members.
“Traders and businessmen are a great campaign force who meet every voter, and as a reserve team, we are ready, steady, and set to protect our hard-earned incomes, businesses, and prospects by rallying behind seasoned President Mzee Museveni,” said Mubarak Isabirye, Chairperson of the association.
However, Isabirye also reminded the government of unfulfilled promises, including improvements to the Traders SACCO, transport access to the Lorry Park, and reductions in power tariffs.
Aggrey Tigawalana, Chairperson of the Industrial Area Milkers, complained of exploitation by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), calling for prepaid meters and stable transformers to meet rising demand for machines. “We are suffering from billing penalties and the reluctance to provide us with prepaid meters to run our machines,” he said.
Transporters and drivers, represented by Saadi Alibawa, lamented that their earnings are often consumed by roadblock fees, particularly at Nagalama, affecting their ability to save and invest in their businesses.
Rehema Nalongo, a long-time vendor at Kamuli Central Market, called for the provision of safe and hygienic facilities for women, including washrooms and spaces for children. She also requested government support in providing transport for women traveling daily to rural markets.
“Women are catching up with family economic liberation, but the hustle is rough. We request some transport and economic boost so we can grow our businesses and support our children and families,” she said.
The traders’ call highlights the challenges facing local business communities and their desire for government intervention to improve operating conditions while continuing to support national peace and stability.
