More than 1,800 livestock have been vaccinated against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Nyakarongo and Bwikara sub-counties in Kagadi District, in a renewed campaign aimed at containing the spread of the disease.
The exercise follows a recent outbreak in parts of Greater Bwikara Sub-County that reportedly led to the death of hundreds of animals, mainly goats and sheep, causing concern among livestock farmers who depend on animal husbandry for their livelihoods.
According to Lawrence Nuwagaba, the veterinary officer for Greater Bwikara Sub-County, the ongoing vaccination drive targets cattle, goats, sheep and pigs as part of a new cost-sharing arrangement between government and farmers.
Under the policy, farmers are required to contribute an annual fee of Shs16,000 for each cow and pig, and Shs8,000 for each goat or sheep.
Nuwagaba said the funds will be used to support government efforts in procuring and maintaining a steady supply of vaccines and other veterinary drugs needed for disease control.
He added that farmers are expected to first make the payments into designated bank accounts before their animals can be vaccinated twice a year under the programme.
Livestock farmers have welcomed the initiative, saying it comes at a critical time following repeated outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease that have severely affected productivity and household incomes.
Kagadi District Chairperson Yosiya Ndibwami urged farmers to fully embrace the programme, saying it is essential for protecting livestock and safeguarding livelihoods in the district.
He said consistent vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent future outbreaks and reduce economic losses in the livestock sector.
