The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has halted operations of the Obongi ferry after it encountered a mechanical breakdown on Thursday evening.

"Dear Obongi district leadership, we regret to inform you that the Obongi ferry encountered a mechanical breakdown this evening during its second-to-last trip. This issue arose due to the rising water levels, which have impacted the vessel's propulsion units," reads part of a social media message shared by ferry captain Francis Opedun with Obongi district leaders on Thursday.

Opedun added that as a result of the mechanical breakdown, the ferry will be unable to deliver its scheduled trips until the issue is fixed.

"We advise members of the general public to seek alternative routes while we work diligently to restore service as quickly as possible," he said.

Adjumani Deputy Resident District Commissioner Emmanuel Okware confirmed the challenges and urged passengers who rely on the Obongi-Sinyanya ferry crossing to use the Omi-Laropi ferry as an alternative.

He also mentioned that a team from UNRA is set to begin repair work on the Obongi ferry.

The suspension of the ferry's operations is expected to increase traffic at Laropi and Omi landing sites. Seasonal flooding on the River Nile frequently disrupts the smooth operations of both Laropi and Obongi ferries, often leaving passengers stranded.

These challenges highlight the need for effective flood mitigation strategies and infrastructure improvements to protect the community at Obongi landing site.
