As Uganda gears up to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) alongside Kenya and Tanzania in February, infrastructural upgrades and socio-economic benefits are already taking shape.
The tournament, seen as a precursor to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is expected to attract a significant influx of tourists and sports enthusiasts, boosting local economies.
Speaking at the conclusion of his annual Oboth Oboth football tournament in Tororo on Christmas Day, the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth Oboth, underscored the importance of leveraging such events to inspire the youth to pursue sports seriously.
At the thrilling climax of the tournament, Nabuyoga Town Council emerged victorious as the 2024 champions, defeating Mwelo Sub County 2-0 at the Siwa Primary School grounds. Siwa Sub County secured third place with a convincing 3-0 win over Pajwenda Town Council in post-match penalties.
In the netball competition, Greater Mulandà clinched the title with a resounding 22-12 victory over Greater Nabuyoga. A total of six teams representing sub-counties in West Budama Central participated in the tournament, showcasing the region's budding talent.
Minister Oboth Oboth expressed his passion for nurturing sports talent in West Budama Central and announced plans to develop a stadium in the region.
“Sports can be a powerful tool for uniting communities, empowering the youth, and creating opportunities. With the upcoming CHAN 2024, we must position ourselves to contribute to Uganda's sports legacy,” he said.
The minister emphasized the tournament's dual purpose: promoting grassroots sports and fostering community cohesion. He commended all participants for their dedication and sportsmanship.
The 2024 CHAN tournament, which features players competing from domestic leagues, is expected to elevate Uganda’s profile as a sports destination.
It serves as a rehearsal for the 2027 AFCON, which Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will jointly host, marking a historic collaboration in East African sports history.
As preparations continue, initiatives like the Oboth Oboth Football Tournament highlight the critical role of grassroots programs in shaping future sports stars.
