Following the current spate of murders and kidnaps around different parts of the country, residents of Muyenga a Kampala suburb have started the mobilisation to build a community police station.

The initiative is aimed at protecting their lives, property and the neighbourhood.

The motive is also to strengthen their security following complains of criminal gangs giving residents sleepless night.

The suggestion which was proposed by the area LCII chairperson Yasin Omar was seconded by all the residents during a village meeting that was held over the weekend.

Residents expressed their fear over the increasing kidnaps and murders in the country noting that they no longer feel safe.

Omar noted that they have so far raised Shs 9.5 million through contributions.

The residents intend to construct a police post which they think will cost 25 million shillings.

“What we are saying is we want to improve on our security system and one of the measures is building a community police post. That’s why now we are fundraising. Our budget is Shs 25 million but we have so far raised Shs 9.5 million,” he said.

He also urged people to acquire personal guns and pepper spray as another method of self defence.

He said once a person has a gun, criminals can not easily attack him or her.

He also noted that some roads in the area are too dark so he urged for the lighting system.

Ojori Florence from Kabalagala police station who attended the meeting called upon the residents to always call for help whenever there is a problem.

“We give you our numbers. Don’t just take security for granted," she noted.
