Rwandan President Paul Kagame has appointed Justin Nsengiyumva as the country's new Prime Minister, replacing Édouard Ngirente, who has served in the role since 2017.
The announcement was made on Wednesday evening in a statement from the Office of the President, marking a significant reshuffle in the country's executive leadership.
Until his appointment, Nsengiyumva was serving as Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda.
An economist by training, Nsengiyumva brings a strong technocratic background to the role, having previously held senior positions in fiscal and monetary policy circles, including advisory roles in the Ministry of Finance.
His predecessor, Ngirente, is credited with steering Rwanda through a period of rapid economic transformation and policy innovation, particularly in education and health.
His departure comes amid growing expectations for Rwanda’s next phase of post-pandemic recovery and economic consolidation.
The Prime Minister in Rwanda plays a key coordinating role in government, overseeing day-to-day operations and policy implementation across ministries, while working closely under the direction of the President.
No reason was immediately given for the change.
Nsengiyumva’s appointment is expected to usher in a new wave of economic reforms, with analysts predicting continuity in Rwanda’s focus on stability, innovation, and regional integration.
