Samson Kasumba: Why insult me if I share a different opinion?

Samson Kasumba: Why insult me if I share a different opinion?

I have failed to find a way of being like other writers who write with consistency.

In fact, I have never understood how they do it. Make no mistake it is not for the want of trying.  Many a time, I have sat on my computer inspired to write and have since failed to know what to say.

Other times I know what to say and just do not know if I can say it unadulterated whilst not courting trouble as can often be the case in Africa’s only Pearl. Do not even tell me that it is that ‘pick up’ still playing on my mind.

I want to believe that to the extent I can get past it, that pick up is behind me as if that can even happen. Those things never leave you the same ask anyone who has been through them especially if you know too well how innocent you are of the trumped-up charges.

Anyway, away from the rumblings and circumventing of whatever it was that I wanted to say, let me try to say what brought me here anyway.

It is the issue of where Uganda is at the moment in as far as public discourse is concerned. I am assuming you can still make the difference I intend to make here because that difference is obvious.

Honest candid discourse is one thing and the thirst to denigrate, humiliate, deride and insult quite another.

The later has grown in leaps and bounds and in tandem with the growth of the frustrations of those who feel that this is a legitimate means of freedom fighting and defence of human rights later on political ideology.

Off course they believe, the proponents of this debased means, that they have a monopoly on the frustration with what is wrong with this nation.

They will even argue that those who are stranger to this their chosen means are part of the problem they are trying to solve using what is clearly part of the problem.

Now if I have lost you here already then you are reading the wrong article and yes you are not very conversant with the nature of man that this writer is.

I must say that on this occasion I am not about to pick you up because writing in such a clear way is both lazy and a means to a problem I am right now trying to avoid.

Who walks into a known problem while harbouring intentions of being wise?

Any way back to where I was. The characters I am talking of are on both sides and yes in both high and low places. You read our public discourse and wonder who bewitched this fantastic nation.

People have become famous for insulting others and are being rewarded for it forgive how ridiculous that sounds.

I come from a place that believes in decency and respect for those I do not necessarily agree with on both ends and means to known ends. It comes natural to me to believe that Insulting people big or small is outright wrong.

Do not even tell me about the logical nonsense that we need to be educated on the difference between insults and saying things as they are.

I was born in a place where what is insult is clear. If it is not clear to you then that typifies our problem that to many have not grown up in places where the clear has never been made clear to them.

There are things you will not hear those who have been educated in a set way say no matter what their frustrations are.

The queen or England does get unhinged, upset, and frustrated plenty of times but you will never see her communications bear nonsense and debased language because she comes from a place oozing polish and class.

Too often we have become lazy to the point of thinking that our frustrations are more important that our values, forgive me for making that assumption that we all have values that make a space for decency.

We who share the belief that we can disagree while not necessarily being debased need to come together, speak to our children and slowly create a new Uganda. That nation where we can disagree plenty whilst not exchanging insults.

There is then a new group excited by new found language so called freedom of speech and the right to offend.

Let me know when the British use the language that so often is used by local politicians here against Vladimir Putin a man that has left them so mad and frustrated. Is it because they need to be taught the freedom to offend at number 10 Downing Street or in Buckingham Place?

It is simply lazy thinkers being invited to use a means those who back them do not employ themselves.

I shall leave the choice to you on a very individual basis. What I am sure of is that I shall never let anyone make be believe that there is anything to gain from debasing and humiliating anyone even when it is someone who is themselves not good of one who has done the same to me.

Tit for tat is one of the weakest of things to do if you come from a known background.

Some of us come from homes with names to protect. That for me is where the line is drawn between us and those I speak of here.

Have a great day if you can.
