Sponsors, Stanbic bank have announced that participating teams in the 2020/21 Uganda Cup will still get their prize money despite the canceling of the tournament.
The FUFA executive committee recently announced that this year’s Uganda Cup had been canceled as part of the decisions made regarding the immediate future of football competitions and events based on the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
“There will be no further action in the Uganda Cup 46th edition. FUFA and the sponsor will soon announce the sponsorship details,"FUFA said in a statement.
However, the announcement left a number of unanswered questions since a number of teams had reached the quarterfinals whereas others were set to play the round of 16 matches.
On Tuesday morning, Stanbic bank announced that despite the cancellation, it will honor its commitment of paying the prize money to clubs that had progressed to the round of 16 and quarter-finals.
“As an organization, we believe that football and sports, in general, is part of society. We, therefore, believe in financing businesses and impressions, education and sport. Sports in general has the potential to employ millions. The Stanbic Uganda Cup is the oldest football competition in the country as it has had its ups and downs. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic for this edition, the money will be issued to the clubs at the earliest time possible,” said Daniel Ogong, the Stanbic bank Marketing Manager.
Edgar Watson, the FUFA Chief Executive Officer applauded the bank for honoring its pledge despite the current challenging times that have hit every sector of the economy.
“At this time when all clubs are struggling for incomes, we really appreciate for this gesture,” he noted.
Accordingly, the six teams including KCCA FC, Kyetume FC, Proline FC, Light SS,Kitara SS and Kataka FC will each receive shs6 million whereas six other teams that were knocked out at the round of 16 will each receive shs3 million.
The remaining four teams that were yet to play their round of 16 games will each get shs1.5 million.
