Joyce Bagala has stepped down from her role as Head of News and Current Affairs at Next Media Services to take part in the forthcoming 2021 general election.
Last week, Bagala was handed the National Unity Platform flag to contest for the Woman Member of Parliament for Mityana, where she is expected to take on incumbent Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Judith Nabakooba.
It will be the second time that Bagala is taking on Nabakooba having lost narrowly to her in 2016. Then she stood on a DP ticket.
In a release, Next Media said Bagala has played a pivotal role in the growth of Next Media Services since she joined in 2016.
Speaking about her resignation, Next Media Services' Chief of Strategy, Joseph Kigozi said that the company has seen many resignations, but this was a difficult one.
Kigozi said: "Joyce Bagala is one of the most notable names in the news industry, and a newsroom led by someone of her stature and ability has been key to our today. We can only wish the best, and hopefully work together again someday."
Kigozi added that Joyce has mentored many young journalists who have since gone on to be award winners and leaders of their own.
According to the Next Media Top Management team, Senior journalist Dalton Kaweesa, who has been serving as Deputy Head of News and Current Affairs, will now take on the mantle of leading the Political Command Centre in the interim.
