A survey by Twaweza ni Sisi has claimed that Uganda's most serious problem is poverty.
Twaweza, in one of its research briefs titled 'More food, less money: Ugandans' experiences and opinions on poverty and livelihoods,' released findings based on data from Sauti za Wananchi (Voices of the citizens) which is Africa’s first nationally representative high-frequency mobile phone survey.
The findings were based on data collected from 1,905 respondents across Uganda in November 2018.
Citizens were asked about what they take to be the country's most serious problem today and three out of ten, which contributed to 29% of the total sample space said that poverty or the rich-poor gap is the most serious.
In a total sample space of 1905 people across all the regions in Uganda, 13% of these selected corruption as the country's biggest problem while only 12% selected unemployment.
The data collected by Sauti za Wananchi was collected using two methodologies of Face to Face interviews with the aid of Computer Aided Personal Interviews (CAPI) and Mobile Phone Panel survey with the aid of Computer Aided Telephonic Interviews (CATI).
On why majority might have thought of poverty as the country's biggest problem, half of Ugandan household members said that they had experienced a situation where a household had to stop or drop out if school due to financial reasons.
While commemorating the World AIDS Day in Kayunga district last week, President Museveni also asserted that one of the key underlying driver of HIV/AIDS in the country is poverty as it leads to many other things such as gender based violence and therefore contributing to new HIV infections.
