Med Kaggwa’s body taken to Mulago hospital for postmortem

The body of Uganda Human Rights Commission chairperson, Med Kaggwa has been taken to Mulago hospital to carry out postmortem.

The UHRC chairperson was rushed to Case hospital on Wednesday morning after being found unconscious in his vehicle and was later pronounced dead.

According to Dr.Patrick Kaliika, the Medical Director at Case Hospital, the UHRC chairperson was brought to the hospital at 7:55 am by a medical doctor from Mulago who found him collapsed in his car near Mulago roundabout.

“The car allegedly stopped suddenly and knocked the car in front of it. The car was found locked and hence broken into by bystanders,” Kaliika said.

However, according to Kaliika, the body will be taken to Mulago hospital to carry out a postmortem, whose report will reveal the exact cause of the death.

“We are taking the body to Mulago to do a postmortem to find out what exactly caused the death,” the Medical Director at Case Hospital said on Wednesday.

This came after earlier reports had indicated that the UHRC boss had knocked another which could have caused his death but according to the Case Hospital medic, the postmortem report will reveal the exact cause of the death.

Private hospitals are allowed to do postmortem reports but the official ones(postmortem reports) are done by government facilities.

Sombre Mood

It was a sombre mood at Case Hospital on Wednesday morning as family members and relatives converged to see the next step following the death of one of their own.

Family members and relatives were seen making frantic calls trying to find out details about the burial of the Uganda Human Rights Commission chairperson.

Among the first people at the hospital was Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, his deputy, Sarah Kanyike, NRM Vice Chairman, Moses Kigongo and  Electoral Commission chairperson  Justice Simon Byabakama among others.

Biography

Born on April 15, 1955, Med Kaggwa was a qualified lawyer with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre and a Master of Laws degree from the National University of Ireland,.

He also served as a Member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the current 1995 Constitution and a commission of the Uganda Constitutional Commission.

Kaggwa also served as the head of the department of law at the Law Development Centre and also as the Minister in charge of political affairs in the office of the President.

He will be laid to rest tomorrow at 2pm in Mpigi, along the Kampala- Masaka highway.
