Police bans open sex, drugs at Nyege Nyege festival

Police has issued a warning to organisers that they should not allow any kind of immoral behavior at the upcoming Nyege Nyege festival scheduled for Thursday at Nile Discovery Beach in Njeru town council, in Buikwe district.

According to a statement by the deputy police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, they have entered into a memorandum of understanding in which police will have unfettered access to the festival to ensure compliance with what has been agreed in.

“Organizers shall ensure this festival is not turned into a political event. Processions and political rallies are not in the mandate of the organizers of this festival,”Namaye said.

“Organizers to provide guidelines to the revelers prohibiting any use of prohibited drugs at the venue, acts of homosexuality, open sex and any other acts considered immoral because the Ugandan culture is a conservative one.”

Last year, government had almost banned the Nyege Nyege festival over homosexuality but they cleared it at the last hour and according to the latest statement, police has warned that such acts will not be tolerated during this year’s event.

The police mouthpiece said security personnel will addition to vetting and accrediting those entering the festival will deploy covert and over personnel, patrols, traffic control, aerial surveillance, and access control in an outside the venue of the festival.

“Security agencies to work closely with other government institutions and Ministries such as Ministry of Health to prevent emergencies such as epidemics. First aid teams and ambulances shall be provided.”

This year the Nyege Nyege festival will be celebrating its 5th edition.
