Members from Uganda's Equal Opportunity Commission and the National Gender Commission of Kenya have come up with a strategy aimed at promoting equality across East African countries.
While addressing the delegate from Kenya in Kampala, the commissioner Equal Opportunities Commission Uganda, Zaminah Malole, noted that the advocacy of unity is aimed at expanding the boundaries in fighting for gender equality such that no one is left behind more especially in East Africa region.
She called for greater cooperation between the two bodies to build equality and inclusive for all people in East Africa.
“The Equal Opportunities of Uganda, the National Gender Equality Commission of Kenya and if there is a similar body in Tanzania and southern Sudan, we should come together,"she said.
She noted that inequality and discrimination can only be fought when there is unity and the will to work together.
Dr Joyce Mwikali Mutinda, the chairperson of National Gender and Equal Commission of Kenya emphasised that there is need to come together so that a review is made on how to deal with various issues particularly concerning equal opportunities.
She said that working together will help promote unity leading to enhancement of equality and fairness in East Africa.
“The issue of trust, meeting together and saying we want to do this for East Africa is important,"she noted.
She said the two commissions have a lot in common with similar mandate of eliminating discrimination and promoting gender equality in all spheres.
