KCCA FC beat AZam FC to win second CECAFA title in 41 years

Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC beat Tanzanian giants Azam FC to win the CECAFA cup for the second time in 41 years.

KCC FC as was then known reached the 1979 CECAFA club championship finals but lost to Kenyan side AFC Leopards.

On Sunday, the Kasasiro boys reached yet another feat by defeating holders, Azam United in finals played at the Stade de Kigali in Nyamirambo.

KCCA FC’s efforts for a goal were all along futile not until the 62nd moment when the decisive moment arrived.

Left back Mustapha Kiiza’s cheeky shot went past the Azam goalkeeper for the Kasasiro boys’ first and only goal of the day to see them seal their first CECAFA title since 1978.

The goal was the beginning of celebrations by both players and fans.

Speaking shortly after the game, KCCA FC gaffer, Mike Mutebi applauded his boys for reaching the feat.

“They came here with belief that they had to win the tournament and fulfilled it. The performance was good in all the games in terms of confidence and putting away pressure,”Mutebi said.

“Throughout the tournament, the performance was above average.”

He noted his youngsters will have a bright future after starting it on a higher note.

“They have a lot of belief they can do a lot of things and this makes it easy for things to happen. This squad is going to take us far.”

The win ensured KCCA FC recorded a double against Azam FC after beating them one-nil in the group stages.

KCCA FC also became the first Ugandan club to win the CECAFA club championship in 14 years after Police FC lifted the title in 2005 under the stewardship of Sam Timbe.

The Sunday victory meant the KCCA FC won the CECAFA championship two times in 41 years after their last feat in 1978.
