Youth with disabilities urged to take leadership positions

The youth with disabilities have been urged to come out and complete in different leadership positions in the 2021 elections if their voice is to be heard.

This was revealed by the National Chairperson of National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda (NUDIPU), Bumali Mpendi during the inception of youths project to establish structures of youth with disabilities .

He called upon the youth with disabilities to fully participate in politics come 2021 and get a chance to take part in decision making and also advocate for their demands.

"We people with disabilities, we are here ,and we equally have the same problems like others,"he said.

He urged government to consider affirmative employment of people with disabilities in civil service and stop undermining them because they have got competences to perform even better than some able bodied people.

"We also need to push this government. We need to push the society and the community to employ us as youth with disabilities,"he said.

Douglas Wadada the national chairperson of youths with disabilities expressed concerns that disabled persons have been left out in many government programmes like Youth Livelihood Programme.

He tasked government to make it mandatory for any youth group to access funds under this programme to have at least 2 percent of it's membership made of youth with disabilities.
