The Rwenzururu King, Charles Mumbere has asked government to allow him travel to Kasese to be able to attend the burial ceremony of his mother.
Christine Mukirania, the mother died at the age of 85 early this week at Kilembe Mines hospital due to diabetes and is set to be buried next week
However, the Omusinga who is facing terrorism and murder charges and was restricted as part of the bail conditions to move out of Kampala, Jinja and Wakiso districts has asked court to allow him travel to Kasese for the burial ceremony before he returns.
“The applicant is seeking for orders that bail conditions which restrict the applicant’s movements within Kampala, Wakiso and Jinja districts only and prohibit him from travelling to or in any manner accessing the districts of Kasese, Kabarole and Bundibugyo during the pendance of his trial be temporarily waived to enable him the liberty to attend the burial of his deceased mother slated to take place in Kasese district at Nyamirangara village in Muhokya sub county on Wednesday June 19,2019,”reads in part Mumbere’s application.
The International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala will hear the application on Friday June 14 before giving its ruling on the same.
Mumbere was arrested together with royal guards in November 2016 after a joint operation by the army and police led to storming of his Buhikira Palace in Kasese Town in which 136 people were killed.
Mumbere was later airlifted and detained at Nalufenya police station in Jinja district but was granted bail by the High Court in Jinja
The Omusinga and his royal guards face several charges of treason, terrorism, murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and malicious damage to property.
Mumbere has since been released on bail but stopped from stepping foot in Kasese unless granted permission by court.
The judiciary spokesperson, Solomon Muyita early this week said Mumbere can ask for and convince court to relax the bail conditions so he can attend the burial ceremony of his mother.
