VIDEO: Justice Remmy Kasule urges court to declare night evictions illegal, set guidelines

The retired Justice of Appeal and Constitutional Court Remmy Kasule has advised that courts of law should come up with a clear guideline for land evictions.

At the invitation of the head of the Commission of Inquiry into land matters Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, Kasule decried the manner of evictions. He noted that some evictions are carried out at night because court has never imposed a guideline that evictions must be carried out in the daytime.

The commission, which has been listening to land dispute complaints since May 9, 2017, has gathered countless testimony from victims of illegal evictions.

Justice Kasule said, "For every eviction to take place, court should produce a timetable for carrying out the eviction and this must be drawn up by court."

He said many fraudsters have used the cover of darkness to deprive people of their land and rights.

He also urged the court process to resolve land disputes to be sped up. He also said that bodies like the National Planning Authority and physical planning bodies should aid in registration of land.
