Preparations for the Kigezi Sub-region to host the 2026 World Population Day national celebrations are underway, with the National Planning Authority (NPA) assessing the suitability of shortlisted districts in the region.
Speaking to district leaders at Kabale District Rukiiko Hall, NPA Senior Planner John Ampeire said the assessment team is visiting three districts—Kabale, Rubanda and Rukungiri—to determine their readiness and capacity to host the national event.
“We are here to assess the suitability of the district to host the national celebrations,” Ampeire said.
He explained that five districts had initially been considered for the assessment exercise, including Kisoro and Kanungu.
However, the two districts were dropped from the shortlist because they border the Democratic Republic of Congo, where health authorities are monitoring an Ebola outbreak.
Ampeire said the assessment will help determine which district is best placed to host the national celebrations and accommodate participants expected from across the country.
Kabale District LCV Chairperson Denis Nzeirwe Ndyomugyenyi expressed confidence in the district’s ability to host the event, citing its experience in organizing major national functions.
“Kabale has previously demonstrated strong capacity in organizing major national functions and we are ready to host World Population Day,” Nzeirwe said.
Kabale Deputy Resident District Commissioner Michael Muramira Kyakashari welcomed the possibility of the district hosting the celebrations, noting that national events generate significant economic benefits for local communities.
“National events like this create economic opportunities for local residents through accommodation, catering, and other services,” Kyakashari said.
World Population Day is observed annually on July 11 to raise awareness about population issues, including sustainable development, health, gender equality and demographic trends.
Uganda marks the occasion with national celebrations hosted in different parts of the country each year.
