During the introduction, Standard Chartered Bank Uganda CEO Sanjay Rughani welcomed Kariisa to the Board and highlighted the value his expertise brings to the institution at a time when digital transformation continues to shape the future of banking.

“We are privileged that Kin brings a new set of capabilities that will allow us to scale our ambitions,” Sanjay said.

“This world is moving digitally very fast, and we could not have had a better leader join us from a digital perspective. His strength in cyber resilience is very fundamental nowadays. As a bank, we have boldly started to embrace AI, which is very critical for the future, and having him as part of our governance is important.”

Sanjay noted that banking has evolved into a full-time digital ecosystem that demands innovation, security, adaptability and forward-looking leadership.

For Kariisa, joining the Board presents an opportunity to contribute to an institution positioned at the centre of Uganda’s economic growth and transformation.

“Joining Standard Chartered Bank Uganda is a privilege and an honour to serve in an environment where I believe I can add value,” Kariisa said.

“My background beyond media is technology, statistics, security risk and systems. Banking has changed. Like what we do at Next Media, today I move with the bank in my pocket through this small gadget. I do not need to physically go to the bank.”

He added that Uganda and Africa are entering a defining phase of growth that requires institutions capable of supporting large-scale transformation and investment.

“As a country, we have moved. But at this particular time, we need institutions like Standard Chartered Bank to move us to another level. We are investing in huge projects and the future requires strong systems, innovation and trusted leadership,” he said.

Back at Next Media Group, the appointment and introduction were received with celebration and admiration from

Transformers, who continue to take pride in leadership that represents Uganda on influential platforms while remaining grounded in purpose, transformation and impact.

The moment stands as another reflection of Next Media’s continued belief in growing leaders, building trusted institutions and creating impact that extends beyond media.
