South Rwenzori Diocese Seeks Shs300 Million to Acquire X-Ray Machine

The Bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese, Rt. Rev. Nason Baluku, has raised alarm over serious health challenges affecting communities in the South Rwenzori region due to limited access to advanced medical services.

Rwesande Health Centre IV, a private not-for-profit facility established in 1989 by the South Rwenzori Diocese of the Church of Uganda, serves about 219,400 people in Busongora North Health Sub-District. The facility has a bed capacity of 56 beds and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of medical officers, nurses, midwives, laboratory personnel, and support staff.

Despite offering outpatient and laboratory services, the health centre lacks a functional X-ray machine, forcing patients to travel approximately 96 kilometers to access radiology services at Buhinga Regional Referral Hospital in Fort Portal or Kagando Hospital in Kisinga Town Council.

While addressing journalists at Namirembe Guest House in Kampala, Bishop Baluku described the situation as dire.

“Our people are suffering because they cannot access essential diagnostic services like X-rays. They are forced to travel long distances, which delays treatment and increases costs,” said Bishop Baluku.

He emphasized the urgent need for financial support to address the challenge.

“We need about shs 300 million to procure an X-ray machine and construct a suitable building. We call upon government and development partners to support us in improving healthcare services in this region,” he added.

To mobilize resources, the Diocese has organized a fundraising dinner scheduled for April 25, 2026, at Hotel Africana in Kampala, targeting to raise shs300 million for the project.

Minister Godfrey Kabyanga also underscored the importance of improving healthcare infrastructure in underserved areas.

“Access to quality healthcare should not depend on where one lives. Supporting such initiatives is key to strengthening our health system,” said Minister Kabyanga.

Samson Bagonza, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, expressed confidence in the fundraising efforts.

“We are bringing together stakeholders from different sectors to contribute towards this cause. Every effort counts in ensuring that lives are saved,” Bagonza noted.

The initiative highlights the urgent need to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in remote areas to ensure timely, affordable, and quality medical services for all
