One Dead in Kabale Road Incident After bicycle Scuffle Escalates
Police say a man died instantly after being knocked during an altercation over a suspected stolen bicycle along Kabale–Mbarara road.

One person has died following a hit-and-run accident in Kabale District after a roadside scuffle involving a bicycle turned fatal.

The territorial police confirmed that Alfred Turyatunga, a male adult resident of Karuma village in Kyanamira Sub-county, died on the spot after being knocked by an unidentified vehicle on Tuesday, April 22, 2026, at about 9:30 p.m. at Kabaraga village along the Kabale–Mbarara road.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate, the incident began when Turyatunga and others reportedly intervened in a dispute over a bicycle that had been parked along the roadside.

“The tricycle was loaded with iron sheets. Turyatunga and others suspected it had been stolen and tried to intervene. During the scuffle, he fell into the path of an oncoming vehicle from the Mbarara side. He was knocked and died instantly. The vehicle did not stop. The bicycle rider and others at the scene fled,” Maate said.

Police said the scene was visited, processed, and documented. The body was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

The bicycle has since been parked at Kabale Central Police Station as an exhibit to aid investigations.

Maate added that inquiries are ongoing to establish the registration number of the vehicle involved and to trace both the driver and the tricycle rider who fled the scene.
