The Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations (SPA/SO), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has described the late Kikuube LC V Chairperson, Peter Banura Araali, who died in a road accident on Saturday evening, as a “vibrant, committed, and patriotic leader in the prime of his life.”
Through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information (DDPI), Colonel Chris Magezi, said General Muhoozi received the news of Banura’s passing with shock and sadness.
“He was an influential and promising future leader. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba extends his heartfelt condolences to our elder, Major General Matayo Kyaligonza, the family, relatives, and friends for the loss of their loved one,” Magezi wrote.
A funeral programme released by the family indicates that a service will be held at Christ the King Church, Kampala, on Tuesday, beginning at 12:00 noon, followed by a vigil at the family home in Kitiko Village, Kigo.
On Wednesday, the body will be transported to Kikuube District for a special council sitting. A second vigil will take place at the deceased’s ancestral home in Buhimba, Kigaya, ahead of the burial on Thursday, 9 April 2026, beginning with a service at 12:00 noon.
According to Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the fatal incident occurred in Butyamba Village (Butyamba IDP area), Kikuube Town Council, when Banura was reportedly struck by a speeding Toyota Hiace while engaging with local residents.
“The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. However, the vehicle has since been recovered and impounded by police,” Rusoke said. “Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to assist with the ongoing investigations.”
Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Several other individuals injured in the accident were also taken to the hospital for urgent medical care. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of casualties or the severity of injuries.
The late Banura was the son of National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war veteran, Major General (Retired) Matayo Kyaligonza. His sudden death has sent shockwaves across Kikuube District and beyond, with leaders and residents mourning the loss of a prominent local figure.
