Transport leaders in Uganda have urged heightened road safety as passenger numbers rise during the busy Holy Week travel period, calling on taxi drivers to prioritize discipline and caution to prevent accidents.
William Katumba, Treasurer of the Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators, appealed to drivers nationwide to avoid overspeeding despite the increased demand for transport services.
“With more people traveling during this period, drivers must exercise greater caution on the road. Overspeeding puts lives at risk, and we are urging all operators to remain disciplined,” Katumba said.
He noted that the federation has been conducting awareness and sensitization campaigns, emphasizing the importance of responsible driving and respect for all road users, including pedestrians.
“Drivers should always remember that the road is shared. Protecting passengers and pedestrians must come first,” he added.
Joseph Sekitoleko, Vice Chairman of the New Taxi Park, reassured the public that transport fares will remain unchanged despite the surge in demand.
“There are no plans to increase fares during this period. We understand the financial pressure many passengers are facing, and we have agreed to maintain the current prices,” Sekitoleko said.
Sekitoleko further revealed that taxi operators, particularly those with older vehicles, have been engaged and committed to complying with government directives issued by the Ministry of Works and Transport regarding vehicle standards.
Transport leaders emphasized that cooperation between drivers, operators, and passengers is essential to ensure safe and smooth travel during the holiday period, which typically sees a spike in road usage across the country.
