Women Judges Hold Pre–International Women’s Day Fellowship in Kampala
Women judicial officers gathered at the Court of Appeal Building in Kampala for a pre–International Women’s Day fellowship organised by the International Association of Women Judges – Uganda Chapter, celebrating women’s contributions to the justice sector and strengthening professional bonds.

Women judges under the International Association of Women Judges – Uganda Chapter (IAWJ-UC) gathered on Friday evening for a pre–International Women’s Day fellowship and meet-and-greet at the Court of Appeal Building Conference Hall in Kampala.

The event formed part of activities leading to International Women’s Day, which will be commemorated on March 8, 2026.

The gathering brought together women judges and other judicial officers in a relaxed setting to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in the justice sector.

The evening offered judicial officers an opportunity to briefly step away from the demands of court work and reconnect in a spirit of reflection, fellowship and celebration.

Participants shared conversations and laughter while reaffirming their commitment to delivering justice and advancing women’s leadership in the judiciary.

Acting Chief Registrar Pamella Lamunu Ocaya said the gathering was intended to provide a moment of relaxation and appreciation among members of the association.

“We came here to have fun, to celebrate each other and simply enjoy being together. Women carry many responsibilities in the community and within our families, yet we continue to serve with grace and professionalism. Today is an opportunity for the Association to give back to us and for us to appreciate how far we have come,” she said.

The President of the IAWJ-UC, Lady Justice Elizabeth Alividza, thanked members for attending the gathering and said the evening was meant to strengthen fellowship among women judges.

“We are here to meet, greet, and catch up. Let us praise the Lord and not take anything for granted,” she said.

Male judicial officers attending the event also reflected on the role of women in society and within the justice sector.

Justice Vincent Emmy Mugabo, Head of the Fort Portal High Court Circuit, spoke about the influence women have in shaping families and communities, noting his personal admiration for his mother and describing women as natural nurturers whose care and sacrifices help shape lives.

Chief Magistrate Paul Matyama described women as the foundation of life, comparing them to fertile soil from which growth emerges.

Magistrate Grade I Timothy Kalende highlighted the resilience and strength of women, drawing inspiration from global figures such as Malala Yousafzai and Maya Angelou, who have championed education, equality and justice.

Karim Kyembe also paid tribute to women for their dedication and sacrifices that continue to shape families, institutions and society.

Adding a youthful perspective, Daniella Mukwaya, daughter of Lady Justice Olive Kazaarwe Mukwaya, highlighted contributions women have made to global innovation, citing inventions such as solar energy technology developed by Maria Telkes and the windshield wiper invented by Mary Anderson.

The evening concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony to mark the upcoming International Women’s Day as members celebrated in a spirit of joy and solidarity.

The event was co-moderated by Chief Magistrates Daphine Ayebare and Rehema Nassozi Sebbowa, who said the gathering not only provided an opportunity for members to relax and mingle but also strengthened mentorship, networking and professional bonds within the judiciary.
