The Uganda Red Cross Society has warned individuals and institutions against the illegal use of the Red Cross emblem.
Officials say there are increasing cases of people buying vehicles or constructing health facilities and placing the Red Cross symbol on them without authorization. They stress that this is unlawful and interferes with the official work of the organization.
“In times of emergencies such as wars, riots, floods, and accidents, the Red Cross is always on the front line providing first aid and humanitarian assistance to affected communities,” an official said.
The organization emphasized that it operates impartially, without discrimination based on political affiliation, religion, culture, nationality, or any other status.
“Our emblem is very important because it clearly identifies us in areas of conflict or disaster. When unauthorized people use it, it creates confusion and can put lives at risk,” a representative explained.
The organization’s legal officer, Alex Luganda, noted that Uganda’s laws clearly regulate the use of the Red Cross emblem and prohibit its misuse.
Meanwhile, the Head of Communications, Irene Nakasiita, said the organization has on several occasions been wrongly accused of actions it was not involved in, only to discover that individuals misusing the emblem were responsible.
“Many people using the Red Cross symbol do not realize that what they are doing is against the law,” Nakasiita said.
She also urged journalists to exercise caution while reporting during emergencies.
“We appeal to members of the media to report responsibly during times of crisis, with the intention of saving lives rather than escalating panic,” she added.
The organization concluded by calling on everyone to carry out their responsibilities transparently during times of crisis in order to reduce the number of people affected
