Police in Bushenyi District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of two primary school pupils who were allegedly struck by lightning and died instantly.
The deceased have been identified as Ainembabazi Maria, 7, a Primary One pupil, and Ainomukama Augustine, 10, a Primary Five pupil, both learners at St Mary’s Primary School Kyamuhunga in Bushenyi District.
The two were residents of Gongo Cell, Kyamuhunga Ward.
According to police, the incident occurred on February 19, 2026, as the children were walking home after having lunch near St Mary’s Catholic Church Kyamuhunga.
The Regional Police Public Relations Officer for Greater Bushenyi, SP Tayebwa Apollo, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.
“Bushenyi District Territorial Police is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Ainembabazi Maria, aged 7, and Ainomukama Augustine, aged 10, who were allegedly struck by lightning and died on the spot on February 19, 2026, while walking home from eating their lunch near St Mary’s Catholic Church Kyamuhunga,” SP Tayebwa said.
He added that police responded promptly to the scene and handled the situation in accordance with established procedures.
“Police promptly responded to the scene and managed it as per the standard procedure. As investigations are still ongoing, we pledge to keep the general public updated in case of any new developments,” he noted.
SP Tayebwa further urged members of the public to observe lightning safety precautions, especially during heavy rains.
“We urge the general public to always abide by lightning safety precautions,” he emphasized.
The incident has left the Kyamuhunga community in shock and mourning, as residents and school authorities come to terms with the sudden loss of the young learners.
