Local authorities have called for stronger coordination between the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the Somali National Army (SNA) to intensify operations against Al-Shabaab militants and sustain security gains in Afgoye and neighbouring areas.
The call was made on Tuesday by the Afgoye District Commissioner, Nur Osman, during an engagement with security forces at Afgoye Barracks.
Osman said continued unity between international partners and Somali forces remains critical to restoring peace and ensuring long-term stability in the region.
He emphasised that joint planning and coordinated operations were key to preventing militant regrouping and protecting civilians.
The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Battle Group 46 Commander under AUSSOM, Colonel Saul Nabimanya, reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to working closely with the SNA, saying sustained cooperation would significantly weaken Al-Shabaab.
“Coordinated operations and unity of effort between AUSSOM and the SNA will significantly strengthen security and accelerate the elimination of Al-Shabaab elements across our respective areas of responsibility,” Col Nabimanya said.
Somali security commanders welcomed AUSSOM’s continued presence and support. The Afgoye Mobile Police Commander, Colonel Nuur Laile, credited the mission and the UPDF for maintaining security in Mogadishu and its outskirts.
Similarly, SNA 25 Battalion Commander Colonel Mustaf Omer praised AUSSOM’s role in stabilisation efforts and its support to Somali national security institutions.
The engagement brought together senior UPDF officers, Somali security officials and local community leaders, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen joint security planning in the face of persistent militant threats.
