The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Third Infantry Division has intensified community-focused Tarehe Sita activities in Moroto Municipality as the nation prepares for the February 2026 celebrations.
The army has carried out town clean-ups and handed over repaired infrastructure to local communities, reinforcing its role in development and civil–military engagement.
The activities include general sanitation exercises in key public spaces, such as Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, Moroto Main Market, and the Moroto Bus Terminal.
Additionally, the UPDF has handed over boda boda stage shades and repaired boreholes constructed or rehabilitated by the forces.
Speaking during the exercises, UPDF Third Infantry Division Public Information Officer Major Godfrey Tumwine Kashaka said the initiatives are aimed at strengthening ties between the army and local communities.
“We are commemorating Tarehe Sita by working with the community to improve their living conditions. These activities are meant to remind the people that the UPDF is part of the community and committed to supporting development,” Major Kashaka said.
He added that the activities, conducted in partnership with banks, the Municipal Council, and local leaders, are ongoing across the Karamoja sub-region. Beyond marking the army’s history, Tarehe Sita serves as a platform to support community development initiatives that directly benefit civilians.
Tarehe Sita is celebrated annually on February 6 to commemorate the start of the armed struggle in 1981, which ultimately led to the National Resistance Army capturing state power in 1986.
UPDF officials have confirmed that more community-oriented initiatives will take place in the coming weeks ahead of the 2026 celebrations.
