The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Infantry Division held a week-long civil–military outreach programme in Karugutu Town Council, Kyenjojo District, ahead of the 45th anniversary of Tarehe Sita. The initiative aimed at strengthening community welfare, promoting public health, and enhancing cooperation between the military and civilians in the Rwenzori region.
The outreach programme featured a free medical camp offering general consultations, treatment of common illnesses, maternal and child health services, and health education.
The medical initiative drew a high turnout from residents of Karugutu and surrounding areas, highlighting the ongoing need for accessible healthcare in rural and semi-urban communities.
In addition, UPDF personnel joined local residents in a town-wide cleaning exercise along streets and public spaces, emphasising environmental hygiene and disease prevention.
The activities are part of a broader effort by the military to support socio-economic development while fostering community engagement.
Speaking at the conclusion of the programme, Mountain Infantry Division Deputy Commander, Col David Opeero, reflected on the significance of Tarehe Sita, which marks the launch of the National Resistance Army’s (NRA) protracted people’s war against oppressive leadership—a struggle that eventually led to the formation of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
“Tarehe Sita is a day to remember our history and renew our commitment to serving the people. Through activities like these, the UPDF demonstrates its dedication to improving the wellbeing of civilians and contributing to community development,” he said.
On the medical camps Opeero noted that the strong public response underscored the importance of bringing healthcare services closer to the people.
“Access to health services improves quality of life and productivity, which ultimately strengthens our communities,” he said.
Local leaders lauded the UPDF’s engagement, describing it as a tangible example of the army’s partnership with the civilian population in the Rwenzori sub-region.
This year’s Tarehe Sita celebrations are held under the theme, “Defending the gains of the revolution and honouring the sacrifices of the freedom fighters,” reflecting the UPDF’s ongoing role in safeguarding national stability while commemorating Uganda’s liberation heroes.
The programme was attended by district and local government officials, including Assistant Resident District Commissioner Mwesigye Hashim, District Internal Security Officer Capt Lawrence Asimwe, Karugutu Town Council Mayor Muheka Raehael, health inspectors, local leaders, and instructors from the Mountain Warfare Training School.
Through this outreach, the Mountain Infantry Division has reaffirmed its commitment to community-centered service, demonstrating that the UPDF’s role extends beyond defense to actively supporting the social and economic wellbeing of Ugandans.
