The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has warned political agents and supporters against placing campaign posters and flags on electricity lines and other power infrastructure, citing serious safety and service risks.
The warning follows trending social media videos showing political candidates’ agents hanging flags and posters on high-voltage power lines during the pre-election period.
UEDCL said such actions are extremely dangerous and could lead to electrocution, power outages and damage to critical electricity assets.
“These acts are extremely dangerous not only to those hanging or placing them, but to the entire community because they can cause unwarranted power blackouts and personal harm to anyone who gets in close contact with energized lines,” said Jonan Kiiza, the company’s Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs.
UEDCL noted that the actions violate Section 87(1) of the Electricity Act 2022, as amended, and urged political leaders and the Electoral Commission to publicly denounce unsafe campaign practices.
The power distributor also advised members of the public to avoid carrying out any work near or beneath power lines, warning that such activities could result in life-threatening accidents.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stable electricity supply throughout the election period and beyond, stressing that public safety and the protection of power infrastructure remain its top priorities.
