Speaking during Sanyuka Morning Xpress on Wednesday, the Nakawa East Member of Parliament urged leaders to put aside political disputes and prioritise saving lives and livelihoods following days of heavy rainfall that have left businesses submerged and communities distressed.

“Accusations won’t stop, but for now, let’s focus on rescuing people. Many have lost their businesses, and some have even died from pressure,” he said.

Balimwezo expressed disappointment over being excluded from key meetings concerning emergency urban planning and drainage response, emphasising the need for cooperation across political and technical teams.

“We shouldn’t politicise this or waste time crying; let’s sit down and work together. How can someone call a meeting and not invite me? The ongoing battles should stop so that we can work together for a better city,” he said.

Balimwezo highlighted a NUP press conference addressing issues surrounding the Nakivubo drainage channel after blame was directed at NUP councillors, noting that he was the technical lead articulating the party’s position.

“The entire area has been sealed off. The only factor that helped was the opening of the proxy channels, which allowed water to flow through,” he said, warning that drainage obstruction continues to pose a major risk.

Balimwezo’s remarks come as Kampala faces some of its worst flash floods in recent years, triggered by persistent heavy rains.

Torrential downpours have overwhelmed drainage systems across the city, flooding the Central Business District and low-lying areas including Kisenyi, Katwe, Bwaise, and regions surrounding Nakivubo Channel. Markets, business centers, and key transport arteries have been submerged, halting commerce and endangering residents.

The situation has reignited public concern over the controversial Nakivubo redevelopment project spearheaded by businessman Hamis Kiggundu (Ham). Many affected traders argue that the redevelopment may have disrupted natural water channels, exacerbating the flooding despite promises of improved urban infrastructure.

Balimwezo stressed that the crisis demands immediate and coordinated action, urging agencies such as the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Water and Environment to expedite drainage infrastructure work, enforce urban planning and construction standards and provide emergency relief for affected residents and business owners.

“I want to thank everyone who has come out to help,” Balimwezo said, reiterating that now is the time for solidarity and decisive intervention.
