The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 2 Infantry Division on Saturday conducted a 30-kilometre route march through Mbarara City in a demonstration of discipline, teamwork, and physical endurance.
The exercise, which started at the Division Headquarters, was led by Division Commander Major General Paul Muhanguzi and involved both officers and militants.
Maj Gen Muhanguzi said the activity was part of the army’s regular training program aimed at ensuring continuous combat readiness.
“The purpose of the route march is to check troop and combat readiness. We regularly conduct such exercises as part of our military planning to ensure that all personnel remain fit and prepared,” he said.
He added that beyond physical fitness, such exercises promote unity, teamwork, and cohesion — vital attributes that strengthen the UPDF’s performance in both peace and wartime operations.
Route marches remain a long-standing tradition within the UPDF, serving as practical tests of endurance and coordination while reinforcing discipline among troops.
The Mbarara exercise, Maj Gen Muhanguzi noted, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the overall preparedness and resilience of Uganda’s armed forces.
