President Yoweri Museveni has said he will sack government officials that do not support the policy of Buying Ugandan products to Build Uganda (BUBU).
Museveni made the statements while commissioning five industries in the Namanve industrial park, on Thursday.
Using the example of a one Joseph Yiga, the proprietor of Steel and tubes industry, Museveni justified the BUBU policy saying the East African market is so big and it is high time Ugandans started producing what they import.
“To support local industries I have already directed that Government departments must buy what is produced here. Officials who do not implement this will be sacked,” Museveni said.
Museveni also decreed that goods imported into the country that are similar to those produced locally will be taxed heavily at a rate “We shall discuss”.
“Industry is one of the sectors that will spur the development of Uganda.
I am told that the park so far offers direct employment to 3000 people, I am happy to be here to commission these factories,” Museveni said.
Regarding infrastructure in the park, Museveni said his government is already working on; roads, electricity and water while he also issued a directive to police to increase their presence in all the industrial parks.
“This coupled with the security infrastructure that we are modernising, we shall be able to arrest criminal elements,” he said.
The industries commissioned are; Orion transformers, Alfasan limited, Steel and Tubes industries, Interior Technologies and Luuka Plastics.
These operators are expected to add value to locally available raw materials thus boosting the agricultural and mineral sectors
