The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) has officially kicked off its nomination process for the 2026 presidential elections, with Rtd Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu Gregg emerging as the first aspirant to be screened and confirmed by the party’s Electoral Commission.

Speaking shortly after submitting his nomination papers, Gen Muntu reiterated ANT’s commitment to building a unified opposition front. He revealed that the party is still exploring the option of fielding one candidate per position in coordination with other opposition forces, particularly the People’s Front for Transition (PFF), with whom they already share an understanding.

"We are still working in harmony with PFF. Once their primaries are concluded, we shall sit and agree on candidates across different positions," Gen Muntu stated.

He also hinted at ongoing discussions with the National Unity Platform (NUP), aimed at forming a broader opposition alliance ahead of 2026.

"We are still negotiating with NUP. If we find common ground—even if not on everything—we should be able to move together to avoid repeating the mistakes that cost the opposition in the past," he added.

ANT Electoral Commission Chairman Dan Mugarura confirmed that the nomination window for presidential aspirants will remain open until July 27.

"We have two more days to receive nominations. After that, we shall announce the party's official presidential flagbearer," said Mugarura.

Mugarura also noted that nominations for other elective positions are ongoing across the country and that a final briefing on all nominations will be made on July 30.

"We’ll consolidate nomination results from all districts and give the country a full report by the end of the month," he affirmed.

Gen Muntu’s nomination strengthens speculation that he may once again lead ANT into the presidential race, as the party continues to push for coalition-building and leadership change in Uganda.
