This project will enhance the cathedral's ability to serve the growing number of pilgrims and Christians who come here, as well as give it a fresh, fitting look for its 100-year milestone

Preparations to celebrate 100 years of Lubaga Cathedral are in full gear, with the biggest task so far being the ongoing renovation of the cathedral’s parking space.

As part of the centenary activities, the Catholic Church is seeking UGX 2.4 billion to give the entire premises a major facelift and organise grand celebrations set for August 26, 2025.

The cathedral leaders say that this milestone is not only a celebration of history but a call for believers to join hands in preserving this spiritual landmark.

Among the works being undertaken is the expansion of the parking area, refurbishment of the archbishop’s ceremonial grounds, construction of a commemorative monument to mark 100 years, improvement of the cathedral’s front yard, and restoration of the perimeter wall around the priests’ burial grounds among others

According to Fr. John Fred Freeman Kiyimba, a member of the centenary organising committee, although the cathedral still looks majestic, it was last renovated in 1976 and is due for comprehensive maintenance.

“This project will enhance the cathedral's ability to serve the growing number of pilgrims and Christians who come here, as well as give it a fresh, fitting look for its 100-year milestone,” Kiyimba said.

Though the Shs 2.4 billion target has not yet been reached, the organising committee has put several strategies in place to raise the funds.

One of the main events is a grand fundraising dinner to be held at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Ndeeba today 10th July 2025, where over 500 invited guests are expected to participate.

Kiyimba is optimistic that the remaining time—just over three months—is enough to complete the works, and he has called on all Christians and well-wishers to support the efforts, especially by attending the Wednesday Masses at the cathedral starting July 23, 2025.

Lubaga Cathedral, often referred to as the "mother cathedral" of all Catholic churches in Uganda, began construction in 1914 under the leadership of Archbishop Henry Streicher (commonly known as Stensera).

It was completed in 1925 and has remained a central pillar of the Catholic faith in the country.
