The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has refuted reports suggesting it is organising a street procession to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, calling the claims false and misleading.
In a statement ,UJA President Mathias Rukundo clarified that the association has not planned any public march or gathering of journalists in Kampala, despite widely circulated messages online suggesting otherwise.
“Our attention has been drawn to misleading information indicating that we have assembled a procession of journalists adorned in branded T-shirts walking through the streets of Kampala,” Rukundo said.
“We would like to inform the general public and media practitioners that UJA has not organised or participated in any such activity,”he added
Rukundo outlined three official activities for this year’s commemorations: a refresher training for journalists held on April 11, a public dialogue on journalist safety scheduled for May 3 at Emirand Hotel, and a football gala on May 4 at Kittante Primary School.
He added that the matter has been reported to relevant authorities and urged action against individuals behind the misinformation.
UJA also advised journalists and stakeholders to rely on verified communication from official channels.
World Press Freedom Day, marked annually on May 3, highlights the importance of press freedom and journalist safety.
This year’s observance comes amid growing concerns over media freedoms in Uganda ahead of the 2026 elections.
