The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, has called for the forgiveness of political prisoners, including veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Speaking as the main celebrant during the 48th commemoration of Janani Luwum in Kitgum District, Archbishop Kaziimba also prayed for the quick recovery of Besigye and other political detainees.

“And forgiveness even to those who really need our prayers, like Dr. Kizza Besigye and other politicians, where we need to consider their health conditions,” he said, while also calling for an opportunity for dialogue.

Besigye has been in detention since his reported arrest in Kenya earlier this year.

The Archbishop’s plea was supported by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo and Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Gulu, John Baptist Odama, who urged Ugandans to embrace reconciliation and reject violence.

“We need to have very clear resolutions to say no to violence,” Odama said, while the Chief Justice added, “I am asking our political leaders—let us cease that momentum. Ugandans need us to speak to one another.”

This call for unity comes as Uganda marks 48 years since the martyrdom of former Archbishop Janani Luwum, who was allegedly murdered during the political turmoil of Idi Amin’s presidency.

Former Pader Woman MP, CD Lowila Oketayot, was among those who applauded Archbishop Kaziimba for addressing the plight of political prisoners, including Dr. Besigye.

Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo further emphasized that political leaders must recognize the importance of dialogue and seek forgiveness for past atrocities.
