An inmate was shot and later died from wounds he had sustained as he tried to escape from Fort Portal government prison, authorities have said.
Uganda Prison spokesperson, Frank Baine said on Monday that Ronald Turyamureeba tried to take advantage of the festive season to attempt to escape from Fort Portal Main Prison but sentries were alert and responded swiftly.
“The inmate was a convict on a case of rape and he jumped off the perimeter fence of the prison. The sentries noted the act and shot to disable him as he ran. He unfortunately succumbed to the wounds,” Baine said.
More escape attempts
The Prisons spokesperson said during the festive season, they registered three more prison escape attempts around the country.
“The prison escape attempts occurred in Dokolo, Iganga and Murchison Bay at Luzira. In all of these, the inmates who had attempted to escape were recaptured,” Baine said.
He described the festive season as being largely peaceful, as the number of inmates only increased by 50.
He said currently, they have 78,824 inmates, 40,805 convicts, 37,474 on remand and 545 debtors while prisons staffing levels at still at 14,000.
Baine noted that visits to prisons have also resumed , following the end of the festive season.
