The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has proudly launched the first-ever Secondary School Technology and Innovation Support Centres (TISCs) at Comboni College and Dr. Obote College in Lira District.
This initiative aims to foster a culture of innovation among students, equipping them with the necessary skills and resources to explore technology and entrepreneurship.
The launch event at Comboni College was presided over by the Bishop of Lira Catholic Diocese, Santus Lino Wanok and the URSB Deputy Registrar General, Mr. Alex Anganya attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including educators, local leaders, students, and members
of the community.
The centers are designed to serve as hubs for innovation, providing students with access to modern technological tools, training programs, and mentorship opportunities that will
enhance their creative capacities.
The TISC program avails innovators and researchers with high quality information resources about inventions and innovations that have been developed in the various fields of technology to avoid the aspect of wasting the limited resources to develop already existing technologies.
This is through providing patent databases and science journals with over 100 million documents with patent information.
This information cannot be accessed on other search platforms like Google.
During the launch, students showcased their inventions developed through their Robotics Club
started two years ago to enhance innovation by the science students.
They unveiled ground breaking innovations including a solar concentrator for cooking food using solar energy, an automated garbage management system, an intruder alert security system for homes, a traffic light control system as well as a 500 watts electric generator for lighting, charging phones, powering domestic electrical appliances.
The success of these projects has motivated the college to secure intellectual property protection and a utility model application has since been submitted to URSB for approval.
Speaking at the launch, Bishop Santus Lino Wanok applauded URSB for supporting creativity of young people adding that the placement of an innovation center at Comboni College would provide motivation for more innovations.
Alex Anganya, the URSB Deputy Registrar General emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent in the field of technology and innovation.
“This centre represents our commitment as URSB to empowering the next generation of
innovators and entrepreneurs. By providing them with the right environment and resources, we are investing in Uganda’s future and stimulating economic growth,” he said.
The centers will offer a variety of services, including workshops on product development, and
intellectual property rights.
Students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on projects, collaborate with peers, and learn from industry experts, creating a dynamic learning environment that encourages creativity and problem-solving.
In addition to promoting technological skills, the centre aims to raise awareness about the importance of intellectual property protection.
URSB will continue provide guidance to students on how to safeguard their innovations and navigate the processes related to registration and patenting. This knowledge is crucial for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to turn their ideas into viable business ventures.
Local educators and community leaders expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative, recognizing the potential impact it will have on students’ futures.
By fostering a culture of innovation, the centers aim to empower young people to contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s economy and society.
As the initiative unfolds, it is expected to inspire a new generation of innovators who will play a vital role in driving economic development and addressing local challenges through creative solutions.
